Some locals have referred to the new courthouse in this East Kimberley town as the “Opera House of Kununurra”. Like historic courthouses that were built around the turn of the 20th century in many WA towns, the architects viewed this project as a chance to create a figurehead for the remote centre. Rather than an imposing building, though, this one is a welcoming place that reflect the area's spectacular landscape and the history and culture of the traditional owners, the Miriwoong Gajerrong people.
I wrote about this project in Issue #122 of Steel Profile, which can be downloaded here, and I'm looking forward to visiting the building myself, when we visit Kununurra on holidays in 2017.
