Why architects need to tell new and different stories now

Rachael Bernstone’s article on how architects can change the narrative, published on The Fifth Estate in May 2025.

As Rachael prepared to launch the Get Published for architects CPD training for the first time, she decided to demonstrate the value of writing thought-leadership articles.

So she wrote a column titled ‘Why architects need to tell new and different stories now’ for The Fifth Estate’s Spinifex section.

This article outlines the major transition that is happening in the architecture profession specifically, and the built environment sector more broadly.

It describes how the biggest trends shaping architecture are no longer primarily related to form and function; they are environmental and social.

And the triple threat – of climate change, the housing crisis and the need for renewed focus on equity and justice – means mean that design approaches and stories that worked for 20th century architects are no longer relevant or applicable today.

In good news, this shift enables architects to take advantage of new “persuasion windows” to promote the value of good design to a much wider audience.
